CELL HOTLINES: (310) 920-1692 Rebecca Constantino
(818) 426 1240 Sandra Tsing Loh

WHY?

O California, the 9th largest global economy, ranks 48th in per-pupil public school funding

O While this "women’s conference" discusses such topics as female entrepreneurship, female wellness, leading a stress free life, and of course, looking one’s best, there is no mention of public school

O As California public school mothers, we believe:

PUBLIC SCHOOL IS CHILDREN
PUBLIC SCHOOL IS AMERICA
PUBLIC SCHOOL IS THE FUTURE

PUBLIC SCHOOL IS A WOMEN’S ISSUE

At next year’s Governor’s Conference on Women, we hope public education can move from out on the street to INTO THE BUILDING

HOW?

O Bring muffins or mini-muffins, either home baked or storebought

O Wear a festive apron if you like--you are a public school mother, you bake!

O And/or bring a coffee can to jingle for donations (gym, music, art program?)

O We’ll have info staple-ons, signage, and extra muffins for you

----> It’s a fun half hour offering a morning muffin--with a message stapled on--to incoming "women’s conference" attendees. . . At 9, you’re done!

Will we be talking about this on public radio and beyond? Of course!

Greetings!

I'm your host, Sandra Tsing Loh, and here are this month's          2007
"Public School Survival Seminar" updates.

First, a warm thank you for those who attended "Martinis and Magnets" Oct. 8th at Avenue 50 Studio--and to those of you who brought your well-behaved children, snaps on the clearly Gifted and Talented parenting. FYI, you told us you hailed from: Highland Park, Mount Washington, Eagle Rock, Silverlake, Montecito Heights, South Pasadena, West L.A., Mar Vista, Glassell Park, Los Feliz, Van Nuys, Venice, Mid-City, San Fernando, Carthay Circle, Echo Park, Chinatown, Pasadena, North Hollywood, West Hollywood, East Hollywood, Angelino Heights, Lincoln Heights, Hollywood Hills, and Windsor Hills.

Indeed, we were so excited by the response we decided to book more events. here are some worth mentioning, all FREE.

Here are* your fresh 2007 magnet applications, icy vodka, and a shoulder to cry on (and even some highly expert non-governmental assistance).

* That said, extra lemon twists will go to parents arriving with their OWN "Choices" brochures (which they’ve obtained by completing the valuable exercise of locating and visiting their local LAUSD schools--we’ll look forward to hearing how that went for you).

Your not-so-Highly-Gifted friend in The Nuys,
Sandra Tsing Loh

About "Martinis and Magnets"

Now in its second year, "Martinis and Magnets" was created by writers (and LAUSD mothers) Sandra Tsing Loh and Christie Mellor.  Back in 2005, they realized: 1) Many L.A. parents were confused about to how to apply to L.A. area magnet schools  2) The magnet point system was complex  3) So complex that for some, vodka would be needed (Trivia question: Modern Spirits Vodka’s creator is Armenian--magnet point "advantage" or no?).

Like a rolling stone that DOES gather moss, Martinis and Magnets has also been accumulating experts on charter schools, neighborhood schools, and more.  You ask, we find out.
